1996年汤毕业于杭州美术职业学校，此后从事过一段模特职业。2000年考入中央戏剧学院导演系。在校期间曾出演话剧《切·格瓦拉》和电视剧《女人不哭》、电视电影《警花燕子》等作品。
2006年，汤受到赖声川的推荐，出演李安执导的电影《色，戒》女主角王佳芝而成名。
她有个男友名为田雨，据传已分手。

Tang Wei (simplified Chinese: 汤唯; traditional Chinese: 湯唯; pinyin: Tāng Wéi; born 7 October 1979) is a Chinese actress. She was selected from more than 10,000 actresses[1] to appear in Ang Lee's Lust, Caution (Winner of the 2007 Golden Lion award), co-starring Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Joan Chen, and Lee-Hom Wang. Tang Wei is also an aspiring writer and director.
On 5 October 2007, Tang revealed that her Western name is Rebecca in an interview on KTSF television channel 26 in San Francisco.
Her mother is an actress and her father is a painter.[2]
